I've been told that the following is possible:

1.  Various bots (google etc), are able to find and index the entire contents of a pdf which exists in a folder within the DNN system.

2.  When found by a bot, a partial "listing" of the find is delivered to google as the text which will be displayed when an organic search finds any text contained in the pdf.

3.  When the user clicks on the link presented by google, the user is directed to a page within the DNN portal but that "page" is not necessarily the pdf itself.

4.  The folder which contains the pdf remains "secure" in that a user, even if they know the fully qualified URL to the pdf, will not be able to access without going through some portal-specified process such as requiring them to provide an email address.

Seems like the guru's of DNN search might have the answers and a DNN module to help achieve the described functionality.

I think I understand your issue. To clarify, you are using the "Standard - FileSystem", NOT the "Secure - FileSystem" or "Secure - Database" type. And you have set the security to the Folder in DNN to be READ for a registered user security role. Correct?

Jeff,

The answer is "I'm not sure".  I have not tried to setup the above-mentioned scenario...I've only been told that something like it should be possible.  I'm looking for input on how to achieve it.

Right now, I have a pdf stored in the standard file system.  If a user knows the url to it, the file can be accessed....not the desired result.

Try the Secure Database type. The only other option would be to set Windows security on those files because they do not get executed by DNN and ther eis no other way to really secure them.
